Shiromochi Taiyaki Chocolate heaven! My 7-Eleven obsession!

7-Eleven needs no introduction; I have written a few blogs now dedicated to the chain and the best things I have gotten addicted to. The chain rotates its options monthly as it operates on the idea that customers will keep visiting to explore the new additions. But it also sadly means it is easy to get addicted to a particular item and see it vanish into the aether, never to be tasted again, leaving you sad and longing. Numerous items on my 7-elven food morning list have sadly been cycled out. Today’s entry focuses on my newest obsession, one which I briefly mentioned when I wrote my blog on mochi. This current entry has fuelled my life now for a good three months, and I want to cross my fingers when I say I believe it is part of the permanent food list. However, one can never know with this chain.

Shiromochi Taikyaki is sold for 180 yen before tax and comes in two unique flavours, chocolate and custard. Shaped like a fish, the white mochi breading is very thin, and you can see the filling inside. The fish is floppy and has become the highlight of my day, should I pass a 7-Eleven, often resulting in a small, sad sigh if the fish is sold out.

The soft, chewy white mochi has a very subtle dough flavour, and the rich, creamy chocolate mousse is addictive. The pairing works so well because the mochi is so subtle in flavour. This small snack is perfect, and I love nibbling on the tail first and anticipating the moment the bites become infused with the rich chocolate. This perfect snack can be found in the refrigerated section in the store, often separate from the main fridges which sell the rice balls, sandwiches and daily lunch options. 7-Eleven seems to have numerous deliveries a day, meaning your chances of finding this snack are often high throughout the day. Even if you stumble upon the store late, you may get very lucky with a late delivery,

Next time you are in Japan, I fully recommend you put this snack high on your list to locate and enjoy. It is my favourite thing all time so far from 7-Eleven, and I will surely mourn the day when I finally leave Japan, or they decide it’s time for the fish to leave the shelves for a lesser product, no doubt.
