Sagas best- spicy Japanese style curry – Yellow spice review

After complaining about the lack of spice in Japan, the spice Gods heard my complaint and decided to hurt me to prove me wrong. Over the winter I finally gained access to Demaecan, Japan’s equivalent of Just eat or Uber Eats. Uber Eats does exist over here, but only in big cities excluding Saga and a lot of Kyushu.

But with Demaecan at my fingertips I gained access to more of Sagas food offerings and the huge bonus? It was all in English because my browser translated everything. This was a gamechanger and came at a low point for me. The world of choice opening was a blessing. I was able to treat myself again to the occasional take out and try different food options in my city. The site is easy to use and shows distance, estimated time for delivery and provides coupons to users.

After my complaint of no spicy food existing in Japan, I was scrolling my new choices, when I noticed (yellow spice) seemingly a small family run business in Saga. They specialised in Japanese style curry with the options to change the topping. Something I do love about Japan is panko or breadcrumbs, often used for tempura and coating cutlets. I am in love with the light golden crunch they provide.

My choice was a homemade pork cutlet curry. Once my choice was made, I was given the option of spice level, and this is where my experience up until this moment doomed me. After concluding Japan could not do spice and after having a level 25 Indian curry in Nagasaki and feeling very let down by my lack of sweating and crying. I opted for the highest spice level! Level three! Afterall there were only three spice levels, how bad could it be?

My curry arrived and it looked amazing the panko was golden brown; the rice and curry was in separate sections in my bowl. The cutlet was amazing and very juicy with a good flavour and the sticky rice was as always perfect. I have a sweet spot of sticky rice it’s so convenient and the way it holds together makes eating easier. I moved onto the curry itself and that is the moment the spice gods struck me down. As soon as I took a bite, I knew I had found the hottest curry in Saga city.

Recently a soup curry place in Fukuoka has taken the crown for hottest dish in Japan.  But Yellow spice still holds its crown as Sagas hottest Japanese curry shop.

The spice was insane, and it got to the point where the rice was gone and the coke, I had been drinking was making the spice level unbearable. One of the worst things you can do is drink sugary drinks when eating spice, the sugar elevates the spice level. The spice sweats had a hold of me, and the burn was building. I ended up unable to finish this curry. This is the first and only time this has happened in Saga. But I love yellow spice and order a level one curry from them from time to time. Their cutlets are tasty, and they often deliver quicker than the predicted delivery time.

If you are ever in Saga and you crave spice, I fully recommend Yellow spice just be aware level three is serious and should only be eaten if you plan to stay in the next day.
