Love hotels - short version rankings 2025

My first encounter with Japanese Love hotels happened by pure chance during a trip to Oita many moons ago, and since then, I have made it my mission to explore these unique lodgings across the country. Each stay has been a new adventure, and I have carefully chronicled my experiences, rating each hotel in a variety of categories.

Some Love hotels dazzle with the extravagance of a luxury resort, while others embody the gritty storybook idea of a shady, seedy roadside motel. They can provide literal extremes in experiences, and some of the very top stays often have no real identifier, bar the fee options that hint they are even Love hotels. After so many visits, I decided to transform my notes into a visual chart for easier comparison and tracking. This updated chart reflects my evolving impressions, as I realised I had sometimes judged too harshly or too kindly. Now, with each hotel’s prefecture noted for your own explorations, I share this list with renewed perspective. Every stay has been memorable, each hotel a story, and I look forward to discovering even more before my time in Japan comes to an end.
