Kyoto, beating the crowds

After sharing my Kyoto review, I felt compelled to write a shorter post focused on the crowds and some tips for anyone planning a visit. Kyoto’s charm is undeniable, but its narrow, ancient streets are feeling the strain of too many visitors. Even though countless blogs suggest arriving at sunrise to beat the rush, the reality is that crowds are now an early-morning fixture. More travelers are setting their alarms to chase those quiet moments, only to find themselves in a sea of like-minded adventurers. And if you do manage to arrive before dawn, you might discover that the best photo opportunities are lost in the shadows.

When I planned my trip, I had all this in mind and did a day’s research to finalise my plans. First, I would recommend making a list of all the things you really want to see. Then I would suggest depending on how much time you have in Kyoto breaking it down into chunks. Work out where your top locations are located and break it down further into smaller chunks. Aim to see a few things and then have an adventure further afield in Kyoto. Kyoto is more than just the city alone. For those wanting to be very adventurous you could mix in day trips to nearby prefectures such as Shiga, Hyogo and even Kobe.

Select a hotel near the railway and allow yourself to slowly chip away at your Kyoto list whilst exploring more locations. Kyoto also offers many beautiful alternatives to the usual suspects, and you may find a beautiful shrine with a handful of people around. Your Kyoto trip can still be magical I recommend booking some experiences in advanced such as kimono renting or tea ceremonies. This way you are guaranteed some experiences with a cap on people.

Research the surrounding suburbs and make a list of places to eat; the more you research the more you will have an amazing adventure. I hope these tips will help you plan out your time and allow you to see all if not more of your bucket list. By breaking your list up and limiting how much you see in the hotspot areas daily you can have an adventure which is unique. Kyoto will reward those who adventure outside of the city.
