King Gyudon - 7 Eleven’s Godly lunch offering.

If you have been following my blog for a while, you might remember my musings on 7 Eleven and the ever-changing world of convenience store food. The shelves are a revolving door, with dishes appearing and disappearing in a flash, all depending on the season, trending flavours, available ingredients, and even the weather. 7 Eleven thrives on this sense of novelty, always tempting customers back with something new and exciting. Of course, this means that falling in love with a particular snack can be bittersweet, as it might disappear almost as quickly as it arrived.

Today, I want to share my latest obsession: the soy sauce beef gyudon from 7-Eleven. For weeks now, it has become my go-to lunch, and whenever I spot it on the shelf, I know exactly what I am eating that day. On the rare days when the gyudon is missing, I feel a pang of disappointment and reluctantly turn to my second love, the pork curry.

This offering has been the light of my life now for about a month, and I am nearing the time when I know the inevitable is coming. When will this product become last season?

Picture this: tender, thin slices of beef bathed in sweet soy sauce, sprinkled with crunchy sesame seeds, all resting on a fluffy bed of white rice. The sauce enhances the beef’s flavour, creating a harmony that other similar dishes, like the beef onion rice bowl, just cannot match. Best of all, this little lunchtime joy usually costs less than a thousand yen.

If you are in Japan and happen to spot this gem before it disappears, do yourself a favour and give it a try. Heat it in the store or at home for four minutes and let your taste buds celebrate.
