Japan’s Long beach – Shimonoseki fishing market and port

A while back, I wrote a piece about walking to Honshu via the Kanmon tunnel from Mojiko in Kyushu. For those who want to take a quicker route to Shimonoseki, there is the ferry that takes just 5 minutes, offering some beautiful angles of the bridge that spans the gap. For those taking this route todays blog will be perfect for you as I want to promote a beautiful area just on the other side of this ride. The ferry leaves from Mojiko port, and visitors can opt for a round trip or even a three-way round trip to see the island of Ganryujima. I took the ferry on a beautifully warm day and was able to enjoy the sight of the bridge and sea in the sunshine. After my ride, I was pleasantly surprised by what I found.

Around the port was a boardwalk area complete with palm trees and plenty of local vendors. The area behind the port is a fish market where visitors can enjoy the freshest catches from the sea. Yamaguchi, in general, is famous for Fugu or pufferfish, a dish which is not for the faint of heart, as this dish can be deadly if it is not prepared correctly. But the fish market offers a huge array of eating opportunities, and when I was there, I could see long lines of people queuing for a few places.

Following the path to the right will lead you eventually to a garden and the Kanmon tunnel entrance. The walk is scenic and runs parallel to the sea. If you take the walk left, you will eventually run into the amusement park, complete with a double-decker red bus that has come all the way from the UK. The amusement park offers rides and places to win an array of prizes. This whole area is very scenic, and you can enjoy ice cream from several places around here.

I fully recommend checking out this area or even walking the Kanmon tunnel and experiencing the opposite side. Shimonoseki offers an array of fresh seafood, a scenic boardwalk and an amusement park to enjoy rides, foods and games. Across on the other side, Mojiko offers Yaki curry, old wooden buildings, a port town steeped in rich history and even a steam train. Both sides offer an amazing experience which would make for the perfect weekend, spend one day in Kyushu and one in Honshu and experience two different prefectures. The experience will make for some amazing memories and delicious food moments.
